Bastet is the Egyptian goddess of the home, domesticity, women's secrets, cats, fertility, and childbirth. She protected the home from evil spirits and disease, especially diseases associated with women and children.
The same Hampstead couple who asked me to make Marmalade asked me to make Bastet, and we agreed that a sandblasted acrylic would provide a mysterious opacity that reflects the rather elusive character. The ear ring completes the more contemporary characterisation of this ancient goddess.
